Big Cypress National Preserve: A Hidden Gem in Florida
Big Cypress is one of my favorite spots to visit in Florida. Known for its vast swamp landscape and untouched nature, it offers an amazing alternative to the more popular destinations like Everglades National Park.
A yearly trip here is always something I look forward to. The park is less crowded, so you can enjoy places to yourself while exploring its beauty. Whether you’re into hiking, paddling, or boating, Big Cypress has something for everyone.
For those who love wildlife, this place is a paradise. Birding enthusiasts can spot rare species, and nature lovers can admire the unique ecosystems. You can also visit an art gallery nearby for a cultural touch.

Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge
During my visit to Merritt Island, I discovered the beauty of the National Wildlife Refuge. It’s truly a wonderful place for nature lovers. Although there isn’t much hiking, the wildlife viewing drive is amazing and offers incredible views. If you’re looking for a perfect addition to your trip to Cocoa Beach or Kennedy Space Center, this should be at the top of your list.
A day trip from Orlando to Merritt Island is a great way to explore nature and the nearby Cape Canaveral National Seashore. The entire experience will set the bar for wildlife refuges you’ve visited before. With parents or friends, this is a must-see spot, with so much to enjoy nearby!
Fakahatchee Strand State Park
One of my favorite places to visit in Old Florida is Fakahatchee Strand State Park, located near Everglades City. It’s home to the Fakahatchee Hilton, a spot I love for its easy Florida hikes and natural beauty. The Tamiami Trail takes you right to Big Cypress Bend Boardwalk, which is another easy hike where you can spot plenty of wildlife.
For a more adventurous experience, the logging roads along Jane’s Memorial Scenic Drive are perfect for exploring the area further. If you want to discover more, you can also visit the nearby Florida Panther Preserve, Big Cypress National Preserve, and Marco Island. These locations, along with the Ten Thousand Islands and Collier Seminole State Park, make for an unforgettable trip in the heart of Florida.
Big Talbot State Park
During my visit to Big Talbot State Park in Jacksonville, Florida, the weather was a bit cloudy and cold, with a strong windy breeze.
Even though the sun didn’t come out to make it bright, we still made our way down the Shoreline Trail to the beach. The beach was peaceful, and we enjoyed a lovely walk along the shore, spotting crabs and collecting shells. It was quite chilly, but we didn’t let it freeze our spirits. We even saw a few birds and admired the driftwood scattered along the sand.
Though there isn’t much hiking in the park, fishing is a great option, especially at the George Crady Bridge Fishing Pier for just $2 per person. I would love to return when the weather is warmer, and I’m also looking forward to exploring Little Talbot State Park, which is a neighboring gem.
